We are a group of concerned citizens who believe Brooklyn District 39 councilmember Shahana Hanif needs to be voted out of office. We are not affiliated with any other candidate for city council. We believe Hanif needs to go for the following reasons:
Handling of the Arrow Linen Rezoning Project
In February 2025, Hanif negotiated a rezoning deal in Windsor Terrace, resulting in two 10-story buildings with 40% affordable housing. While this was a shift from the original proposal of taller buildings with less affordability, Hanif failed to engage with community members in a meaningful way and instead sided with the developer and real estate lobbyists like Open NY.
Positions on Israel and Antisemitism
Hanif has taken radical positions on geopolitics that have nothing to do with her duties as a councilmember.
- Response to Hamas Attacks: Following the October 2023 Hamas attacks, Hanif attributed the violence to Israel’s “illegal, immoral, and unjust occupation of the Palestinian people,” without explicitly condemning Hamas. New York Post+2Jewish Insider+2New York Post+2
- Council Voting Record: In April 2023, she was one of two council members to vote against establishing an “End Jew Hatred Day,” citing concerns about the initiative’s right-wing affiliations. New York Post+1The Forward+1

Allocation of Discretionary Funds
Reports from March 2025 indicate that Hanif directed over $149,000 in discretionary funds to organizations associated with her husband, Abdullah Younus. These allocations, which were not disclosed to the City Council as potential conflicts of interest, have raised questions about transparency and ethics in her funding decisions. New York Post.
